Remote support, screen sharing and meetings through your own Windows or Linux server – even on a Raspberry Pi. What FSRdp does differently from TeamViewer, and when TeamViewer remains the better choice.

TeamViewer is one of the best-known remote support tools: mature, widely used and, like FSRdp, from Germany. People who look for an alternative anyway usually do so for one of three reasons: sessions should run through their own server rather than a vendor's infrastructure, the cost per supporter should come down, or several people should join a session at once – including people without any installed software.

How FSRdp Differs from TeamViewer

Your own server instead of the vendor's infrastructure

TeamViewer routes every connection through its own infrastructure and offers no self-hosted server. With FSRdp it is the normal case: as a Windows service, as a systemd service on Linux or on a Raspberry Pi 5 behind your own router. Video, audio, chat and files run through this server, not through a vendor's infrastructure.

Share only the area that matters

TeamViewer shares the entire screen or a window. In the FSRdp Windows client you drag a frame around exactly the area the other person should see, and FSRdp remembers it per monitor. On ultra-wide and multi-monitor workstations everything else stays private, and the image stays readable.

Sessions in several languages

If wanted, the room owner switches on live captions: every participant reads what is said, and the chat, in their own language. For this, room audio is sent to an external speech recognition service – OpenAI (USA) by default, and replaceable. That is why the feature is off by default.

A predictable price per supporter

FSRdp costs €7 per supporter per month plus VAT, one year in advance; your customers and guests need no licence. TeamViewer's list prices start at around €25 per month. Before you decide, FSRdp runs free for 30 days on your own server.

When TeamViewer Remains the Better Choice

FSRdp does not replace every use of TeamViewer. Stay with TeamViewer if you mainly need the following:

Unattended access. With FSRdp there is always someone at the shared computer who starts sharing and grants remote control themselves. Maintaining computers with nobody in front of them is not part of the design.
Remote control of smartphones and tablets. FSRdp has no mobile apps of its own. In the browser of a phone or tablet you can join a session, but the device itself is not remote-controlled.
Large, centrally managed device fleets. FSRdp is not built for managing many devices or for integration with ticketing systems.
